Berlin Blues
Recently I saw three films which I want to comment briefly:

Herr Lehmann (2003): A remarkable film based on the novel by Sven Regener. Although people say the book is better, the movie is also worth seeing. The story takes place in Berlin Kreuzberg not far from where I am living currently. The separation of eastern and western Berlin is an aspect of the plot whereas funnily some days ago the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall was celebrated. The film has both, some funny and some serious moments.

Kabluey (2007): To my opinion Hollywood wants either comedies or heroes. There are almost no films about antiheroes. The subtitle of Kabluey is “Every family has a black sheep. This one is blue“. It is not surprising that the film was not very successful. Nevertheless I like it, because it shows some truth about society. The design of the mascot is amazing. The only bad thing is that the antihero turns out to be a little bit of a hero and a little less of an antihero.

THX 1138 (1971, directors cut): My mother fell asleep literally after the first 5 minutes. I do not know what to think about this movie which is the first one directed by George Lucas. I like the futuristic setting and the very abstract ambience. It shows a society where everything is forbidden and controlled. It criticizes the headless consumption of useless goods. However, since everything seems to be planned, it could as well be understood as a criticism of socialism. According to wikipedia: “It was .. commercially unsuccessful .. The movie is now considered a cult classic”.

Sorry, no links this time. Search in imdb and wikipedia.
