If not then these might be helpful:
Indexes a chapter from The Chicago Manual of Style
wikibooks indexing
Most important are probably these usages:
\index{hello}
\index{hello!Peter}
\index{Jenny|textbf}
\index{Quantum Mechanics|(}
\index{Quantum Mechanics|)}
\index{pdf|see{probability density function}}
It is advisable to use singular terms, except e.g. "correlations".
And only to index established appreviations, otherwise to use see-reference.
Update (22.10.2024): I want to have persons in italic and am using:
Christopher Alexander\index{Alexander, Christopher@\textit{Alexander, Christopher}}
