big in Vienna?

Today is our last day in Vienna. Yesterday and the day before were complete - not to say overwhelming - successes. Our session went great, people gave great talks, we had the poster session, and finally a nice session dinner with many different people.
Yesterday we used the opportunity to eat a Schnitzel from Vienna made of veal. We also bought some Mozart-balls and oblates (from the Obladen-Laten). At the conference we sent some postcards and are curious which of them reach their destiny - so please let us know. On the way home we crossed the Nasch-Markt. For dinner we went to a vegan restaurant. Next week we are back to reality.

Wein in Wien

Wie sicherlich alle mitbekommen haben, war die Demo ein voller Erfolg. Stefan war auch da und wir sind brav hingegangen.
Sonst war in letzter Zeit viel los und ich bin kaum dazu gekommen, hier etwas zu schreiben. Jetzt bin ich mit ein paar Kollegen in Wien (Stichwort: Klassenfahrt & Co) bei einer grossen Tagung mit vielen schlauen Leuten. Eigentlich wollten wir mal Yoga machen, aber Makkus weigert sich, nur weil er vorgestern Halbmarathon gelaufen ist.

zur Großdemonstration nach Berlin:
"Am Samstag, 26. März findet in Berlin eine der Großdemonstrationen gegen Atomkraft statt. Der Ablauf in Berlin wird wie folgt aussehen:
12 Uhr - Potsdamer Platz - Auftakt und Beginn der Demonstration.
14 Uhr - Straße des 17. Juni - Abschlusskundgebung. Die Bühne steht auf der Straße des 17. Juni, kurz vor der Yitzhak-Rabin-Straße in Richtung Siegessäule."

Eisbär Knut ist gestorben:
"Berlins Eisbären-Star Knut ist tot. Nach Angaben von Bärenkurator Heiner Klös brach das vierjährige Tier am Samstag zusammen und schwamm tot im Wasser des Eisbärengeheges. Die Todesurache ist bislang völlig unklar. Deshalb soll Knut obduziert werden."
Vielleicht hätte es ihm in der Arktis besser gefallen.
Hat eigentlich mal jemand versucht Eisbären in der Antarktis auszusetzen? Oder Pinguine in der Arktis?

Sun is shining, weather is nice. Perfect opportunity to stay at home and to write a blog entry. So do I.
Many years ago I have been living abroad. At the time electronic mail was not yet established/popular. This means, one had to write conventional mail. Although we had one of the early deskjet printers, it was common to write personal letters manually (have you ever tried?). Typically the letters took 5-7 days to arrive, one way. Since it was a bit of work to write, one usually also did reply letter right away. Accordingly, there was a period of two to four weeks between sending and receiving letters.
I do not need to detail, which options one has nowadays. To my opinion, mainly the popularity of emails accelerated communication and today one sends mail to Japan, New Zealand, South America, etc. The messages basically arrive instantaneously which represents almost infinite acceleration. Moreover, one can attach pictures and any other digital stuff. The Internet and the involved services provide possibilities which at the time one did not even dream about.
For the young people among you: it was very common to send postcards when one was in vacation and traveling somewhere. I never really liked this habit. The reason is that it looked like if one wants to showoff about where one went for a trip. But it also means that one thinks and misses those who are at home. Today it is not special anymore to fly e.g. to China – just like this. In contrast, it can be very painful if one has to travel a lot. The same holds for communication. It can be very exhaustive.

Ich will hier mal darauf hinweise, dass man zwischen Atomphysik
"Die Atomphysik beschäftigt sich mit dem Aufbau der Atome aus Atomkern und Elektronenhülle und der Wechselwirkung der Atome und Ionen mit anderen Atomen oder Ionen, mit Festkörpern, mit elektromagnetischer Strahlung, mit elektrischen und magnetischen Feldern."
und Kernphysik
"Die Kernphysik ist der Teilbereich der Physik, der sich mit dem Aufbau und dem Verhalten von Atomkernen beschäftigt."
unterscheidet.
Entsprechend ist der korrekte Ausdruck "Kernkraftwerk" und nicht "Atomkraftwerk".
Das hilft jetzt zwar auch nicht, aber sollte mal wieder in Erinnerung gerufen werden, weil das Thema zZ so aktuell ist.
